I played Spanish Bay golf course today with Chris Hofmann, Tom Paquin and Paul MacQuiddy. It is an absolutely beautiful and amazing golf course. I would rate the course as being very difficult. I lost nearly 12 golf balls due to the abundant plants and sand along side the fairly narrow fairways. Being an idiot, I didn’t bring my camera to capture the amazing beauty of the course. I will have to play this course again simply to take pictures.

May 30, 2002Time for Chimera to grow up
May 30, 2002Chimera isn’t all it is cracked up to be.
Recently there has been a lot of fuss over David Hyatt’s latest vaporware project. So what if it is the fastest browser on the Mac. Have you used a Mac lately? It is still extremely slow! The way I see it, the only thing it has going for it is the fact that it looks like an OS X application.
I recently tried out versions 0.2.7 and 0.2.8. The startup time, while faster than Mozilla, is about 4 seconds slower than Internet Explorer.
Since Chimera uses Gecko, webpage layout works fine. However, after using the browser for a little while, I noticed some basic features were missing. Here is a short list of things that I ran in to while running.
major problems:
I was unable to download files using Chimera. This alone stopped me from being able to use the browser.
When using the “smooth text” option, which is on by default, the browser renders pages much slower. I don’t understand why this is on by default. You also have to reset the preference every time you start the browser because it is not saved.
While sitting idle, in the background, Chimera would go from using 0% CPU to nearly 100% causing my system to slow down greatly.
minor problems:
Scrolling is jerky. Unfortunately, it is also like this in IE and Mozilla. I suppose this is a problem with Mac OS X?
No “Home” button on the toolbar.
I was unable to locate a place to set my home page.
We should remember that the current versions of Chimera are very early releases and future versions promise to contain many new features. It is worth checking out, but I wouldn’t recommend using it until they fix things like file download.
Wicked!
May 29, 2002After watching Harry Potter tonight, I instantly wanted to see what scenes had been cut. Unfortunately, it turns out the special features disc is a giant maze and requires you to be a wizard to find them. If you are like me and don’t have two days to spend searching for them, here is a link that explains how to reach them. There are 7 extra scenes in total, far less than I expected, but they are worth watching none-the-less. I had really hoped for additional Quidditch scenes or scenes relating to the Hagrid’s dragon that more closely resembled the book, but I guess I’m out of luck.
Are there enough choices?
May 28, 2002I went shopping today at Don Sherwood Golf & Tennis World. I was in search of golf balls. The little round white balls that you hit with a stick. This should be easy right? Apparently not. There were at least 14 different manufacturers and each one had at least 3 different types of balls. How in the world do you choose what kind of balls to use?
Recently when trying to purchase bread at Safeway, I ran in to a similar problem. There were 10 different kinds of bread: white, wheat, multigrain, 7 grain, etc. Each had 3 different brands making the same kind of bread creating shelves that contained hundreds of loaves of bread. How the hell is someone supposed to figure out what they like aside from buying each kind?
I am all for giving consumers a choice, but at what point does it become problematic for the consumer?
You’re a Wizard Harry!
May 28, 2002I received Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Mars Attacks! on DVD from Amazon today. I’ve been looking forward to the release of Harry Potter for some time now. It is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. I look forward to watching it when I get a chance.
Cheap vacation
May 28, 2002Ever wanted to visit Ottawa? I’ve found a nice place to stay.
Big Head Dave
May 28, 2002David’s head seems to be growing. Two news sites, The Register and MacGuardians (german), have linked to his blog. It’s too bad that I’m sworn to secrecy because I know all the juicy gossip.
Picture of the week
May 27, 2002I’m going to try and take some kind of interesting picture every week and post it. Hopefully this will act as an incentive for me to carry my camera around with me to more places.
Invalid HTML? Oh my heck!
May 27, 2002In response to Ian’s recent comment about my blog. I have this to say:
Your blog contains invalid HTML and my browser, which only displays W3C perfect pages, won’t display it. I predict the W3C is going to kick you out of their fantasy world real soon now. Perhaps then, you can get a girlfriend.
